Fire extinguisher hydrostatic testing: the 5- and 12-year cycles

Hydrostatic testing pressure-tests the extinguisher's shell itself, on the longest cycle of any service. NFPA 10 sets that interval at either 5 years or 12 years, keyed to the agent.

What a hydrostatic test is

The extinguisher is emptied and disassembled, and the cylinder is filled with water and pressurized to a rated test pressure. A shell that leaks, bulges, or distorts fails and is retired. A shell that passes is dried, reassembled, recharged, and returned to service, with the test date and the tester’s stamp recorded on it.

12-year agents

Dry-chemical (ABC, BC, Purple-K), clean-agent, and halon extinguishers are hydrostatically tested every 12 years.

5-year agents

Water, CO2, and wet-chemical (Class K) extinguishers are tested every 5 years. So a Class K extinguisher over a fryer and a dry-chem extinguisher down the hall are on different shell-test clocks even though both get the same annual maintenance.

Two branches worth flagging

A stainless-steel-shell dry-chemical extinguisher takes a 5-year hydrostatic test rather than the 12-year one — the shell material changes the interval. Non-rechargeable (disposable) extinguishers are never hydro-tested; they are removed from service 12 years from the manufacture date.

Because the interval turns on the agent and the shell, anchor each test to the unit’s manufacture date and confirm the requirement per extinguisher.
